Robert T. McClelland March 17, 1930
The McClelland family originated in and around Mourie, Scotland - Earliest known member was Sir George McClelland, who was knighted during Queen Elizabeth's Reign.
Some of them went into northern Ireland, where Nathaniel and Robert were born. They were two of thirteen children.
Robert McClelland was born August 9th, 1801 and died April, 1877 - 76 years old. He came over seas when 18 with two sisters - one of them died and was buried at sea. The other sister, Margaret, made her home with Robert until she died at the age of 65.
Robert married Pricilla Marshall. She was born June 20, 1824 at Zanesville, Ohio - one of twelve children.
The Marshalls came from Virginia and settled in Ohio - came west to Illinois, moving in wagons and on horseback.
One of Pricilla's brothers, Stewart, was representative in the Illinois Legislature for several years. His son Stewart, was a Lawyer and Chairman of the Illinois Drainage District Board. When he died, the family lived in and around Ipava, Illinois.
Six children were born to Robert and Pricilla, one of whom married W.O. Hopkins. All are now dead except Edward McClelland, who is now 83 years old and living in Astoria, Illinois.
Robert McClelland became the owner of quite a large tract of land adjoining Astoria and was considered very well fixed - financially - practically all of his land was underlined with a six foot vein of coal sixty feet below the surface. This alone signified thousands of dollars.
Robert had an older brother, Nathaniel, who came to America sometime previous to Robert's coming. Shortly after Nathaniel came, a family named "Coulter" came over. They had a daughter, Elizabeth, who was twelve years old at this time. She was born in Banbridge County, Downs, Ireland, May 8th, 1800.
When she landed in New York, Nathaniel McClelland was working on the fortification against the British. Six years later, Nathaniel and Elizabeth were married in New York, after which they moved to Patterson, New Jersey.
In 1824 they moved to Ohio across from Wheeling. In 1830 they moved to Bond County, Illinois. In 1836 they moved to Fulton County near to Astoria.
Twelve children were born to them, one of whom married W.O. Hopkins' sister. All of Nathaniel's children are now dead. Nathaniel died in 1845. Elizabeth died August 6, 1892 - age 92 years old and three months, being the oldest person in Astoria at the time of her death.
William McClelland, son of Nathaniel and Elizabeth, was born in Ohio March 22, 1824 - he died in November 22, 1889. He married Juliette Hopkins, who was born September 19, 1828 - she died December 19, 1908. To them were born nine children, of whom four are still living, Howard, Thomas, Lilly, and Hester.
Thomas McClelland, son of William and Juliette, was born in Astoria, Illinois, December 16, 1863. He married Carrie Belle Anderson , who was born in Rushville, Illinois, May 8, 1867. To them were born three sons, only one of whom is living, Robert Thomas, McClelland, born in Chicago, Illinois.
Robert McClelland, son of Thomas Grant and Carrie Belle, was born in Chicago, Illinois, August 21, 1898. He married Helen Mary Schlegel , who was born in Colombia, Pennsylvania, April 15, 1899. To them was born one daughter, Caryl Belle McClelland born June 24th, 1924 in Chicago, Illinois. |
