Died, at her home in Astoria, Aug.6th, 1892, Mrs. Elizabeth McClelland, aged ninety-two years and three months. Elizabeth Coulter was born in Banbridge county, Downs, Ireland. May 8, 1800. When twelve years of age her parents moved from Ireland to New Jersey. When she landed in New York, Nathaniel McClelland, her future husband, was working on the fortifications, fortifying against the British. After living in New Jersey six years she was married to Mr. McClelland and in 1824 emigrated to Ohio and settled on the Ohio river opposite Wheeling. About the year 1830 they again emigrated and settled in Bond County, Illinois and in the year 1836 they moved to Fulton county and settled in Astoria, where she has since resided. Her husband died in 1845. Mrs. McClelland was the mother of twelve children, six boys and six girls of which one son, R.H.McClelland, of Homersville, Neb., is still living. John, Nathaniel, William, Thomas G., and James are dead; Margarett Smith, Hannah McLaren, Susan Brown, Elizabeth Maxwell and Nancy McClelland are living. The oldest daughter Mary Huff is dead. Aunt Betsey as she was styled by everybody, was, at the time of her death the oldest person living in Astoria and has been a member of the Methodist church since 1830. On account of her being the oldest member of the church she had the honor of spreading the morter at the laying of the corner stone for the present M.E.church. For the past few years she has been a, great sufferer but her daughter Nancy took the best possible care of her and was no doubt the cause of her living to the ripe old age she did. The funeral occured from the M. E. church, Rev. A. Clarke officiating. The remains were intered in the Astoria cemetery, followed by a large number of friends and relatives. |
